Kennedy frantically spun the wheel, hoping to make a torpedo attack, but he was too late. The Amagari sliced PT-109 in half. Two sailors died in the collision. The skipper and the surviving crew went into the water. Spilled fuel ignited and Master Machinist Mate Pat McMahon suffered severe burns before the Amagari’s wake dispersed the flaming water. Kennedy rounded up his men in the water and had them cling to PT-109’s wreckage.
